Speaking to Morocco World News at Global Food Week’s cultural heritage showcase, Umm Maryam revealed the artistry behind her home-based fragrance business.
“I create all these products myself, and thank God I’ve succeeded with them,” she explained, describing how traditional techniques blend with modern preferences in her handcrafted perfumes and incense.
Her craft represents knowledge transmitted through generations. “I learned these skills since childhood with grandmothers when they would work over fire,” Umm Maryam shared, noting how she began with “mukhammaria, which is our old perfume with saffron.”
Yet innovation drives her approach: “I developed it by using saffron for color rather than fragrance as I wanted,” adapting ancestral formulations to contemporary tastes.
The production process maintains traditional methods while incorporating personalization. “I use oils at home, and even the bottle-sealing process I do myself,” she detailed, emphasizing the customization possibilities.
“I can reduce or increase concentration and do anything the customer wants,” allowing her to create bespoke fragrances tailored to individual preferences.
Her diverse product range reflects both tradition and entrepreneurial vision. “I make hair perfumes, regular perfumes, body perfumes, sprays, incense, and everything else,” she noted, while expressing aspirations for growth beyond her current home workshop: “I hope for support, and God willing, I hope to open a shop – why not?”
